Spatial distribution of 17-year periodical cicada (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) exuviae and oviposition injury in Mid-Atlantic, USA Apple orchards and implications for management

چکیده
Tree fruit orchards in some Mid-Atlantic states are within the geographic range of 17-year periodical cicada Brood X, Magicicada septendecim (L.) and M. cassini (Fisher) (Hemiptera: Cicadidae), can be badly affected by injury from its oviposition branches. Several applications broad-spectrum insecticides, such as pyrethroids, needed to mitigate this injury, but incite secondary pest outbreaks impacting natural enemy populations. The spatial distribution exuviae have not been examined relation edge effects or effect different adjoining habitats, which cicadas move into orchards. Addressing these knowledge gaps may reveal potential for spatially precise insecticide targeting cicadas, thereby mitigating spraying entire orchard blocks. In 2021, X (a proxy during emergence 17-years previously) was measured using tree transects commercial apple Virginia West Virginia, USA. All had woods non-woods habitats along opposite borders, depending on their age, were exposed previously. Orchard edges facing woodlands vulnerable cicada. Overall, there a tendency somewhat higher numbers sites border rows woods, however both variables recorded considerable interior woods. Results discussed implications management

Spatial Distribution of Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Injury at Harvest in Mid-Atlantic Apple Orchards.
Brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål), injury to late-season apple cultivars was measured at harvest in 2011 and 2012 in commercial orchards in four mid-Atlantic states. In each orchard block, a border zone (adjacent to woods), an interior zone (near orchard center), and an intermediate zone (between border and interior zones) comprised 1-3 tree rows per zone, depending on block ...
متن کاملMonitoring stink bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in mid-Atlantic apple and peach orchards.
Pyramid traps coated with "industrial safety yellow" exterior latex gloss enamel paint and baited with Euschistus spp. aggregation pheromone, methyl (2E,4Z)-decadienoate captured more stink bugs than all other baited and unbaited trap types in both apple and peach orchards in 2002 and 2003. Commercial sources of dispensers of methyl (2E,4Z)-decadienoate deployed in association with pyramid trap...
متن کاملEndothermy and chorusing behaviour in the African platypleurine cicada Pycna semiclara (Germar, 1834) (Hemiptera: Cicadidae)
Cicadas use acoustic signals to find mates and therefore offer a phylogenetically independent opportunity to test the generality of ideas about acoustic communication that were developed from studies of other animals. Pycna semiclara (Germar, 1834) (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) is a forest-dwelling platypleurine cicada that uses its calling song to form choruses and attract mates. Additionally, P. sem...
متن کاملRegularities and irregularities in periodical cicada evolution.
Periodical cicadas are one of those creatures that everyone in eastern North America knows, if only periodically. The seemingly magical invasion every 17 or 13 y of millions upon millions of black, red-eyed, vaguely demonic-looking insects that fill the air with their incessant droning is, indeed, not something that one can easily ignore. These insects even inspired Bob Dylan, in his song “Day ...
متن کاملAnalysis of Inter-Individual Bacterial Variation in Gut of Cicada Meimuna mongolica (Hemiptera: Cicadidae)
Intestinal bacterial community plays a crucial role in the nutrition, development, survival, and reproduction of insects. When compared with other insects with piercing-sucking mouthparts, the habitats of cicada nymphs and adults are totally different. However, little is known about the differences in the gut bacterial communities in the nymphs and adults within any cicada species. The diversit...
